10 wrong beliefs about UK visa sponsorship

Most people do not lose the sponsorship race to the rules. They lose it to wrong information from friends, agents and Facebook groups. Here are the ten beliefs we see cost people the most time and money - each one corrected in plain English.

Myth 1: a big company can always sponsor

A sponsor licence is a permission from the Home Office, not a feature of size. A company with 2,000 branches can have no licence; a ten-person office can have one. The only way to know is the register on gov.uk - never the company's size or fame.

Myth 2: if the employer likes me, the visa is certain

The employer's goodwill is one of three requirements. The company must hold the right licence, the job must be an eligible type, and the salary must clear the floor for that exact job. Plenty of willing employers cannot sponsor because one of the other two fails.

Myth 3: I need £41,700, so it is impossible for me

That is the standard threshold. A person switching from the Graduate or Student route usually counts as a new entrant: the floor drops to £33,400 and each job's going rate drops too. And Health and Care route jobs need only £25,000. The wall is lower than the rumour says.

Myth 4: any full-time job on my PSW can become sponsorship

Working somewhere on your Graduate visa does not make that job sponsorable. When you switch, the job itself must be an eligible occupation at eligible pay, from a licensed employer. Check those three things for the job you already have - sometimes the answer is yes and nobody asked.

Myth 5: an agent can arrange sponsorship for a fee

Selling a Certificate of Sponsorship is illegal. Licences used that way get revoked, and every worker under them gets a 60-day letter. The £15,000 disappears with the agent. Nobody legitimate sells sponsorship.

Myth 6: only IT companies sponsor

Health and care is by far the biggest sponsoring industry in the UK, with the lowest salary floor. IT sponsors too, but its going rates are among the highest. If your goal is to stay, care and health employers are the widest door.

Myth 7: apply to everything, something will stick

Most UK job ads come from companies that cannot sponsor anyone. Applying to them is not bad luck, it is zero: no number of applications to a non-sponsor produces a visa. Check the register first and every application becomes a real chance.

Myth 8: once I am sponsored, I am safe

Your visa lives on your employer's licence. If the licence is revoked - and in the care sector this happens weekly - you usually get about 60 days to find a new sponsor. Keep your CV current and your documents ready even after you switch.

Myth 9: freelancing or gig work can lead to sponsorship

Skilled Worker sponsorship is a direct employment relationship with the licensed company. Delivery apps, freelancing and self-employment cannot sponsor you, whatever a broker claims.

Myth 10: the sponsorship paperwork is my job

The company creates the Certificate of Sponsorship in its own Home Office account - you cannot buy or file it yourself. Your part is the visa application built on it. Anyone offering to 'file your sponsorship' for money is selling something that does not exist.
