What actually counts as modern slavery at work in the UK

When people hear modern slavery they picture something from a film. That picture is why so many never come forward: what is happening to them does not look like the film, so they decide it does not count.

It counts more often than you think. Here is what it looks like in a real UK workplace.

Money

• Wages paid late, short, or not at all, month after month.
• Money taken back out of your pay for things you never agreed to.
• A debt you are told you owe for your job, your visa or your flight.
• Being paid less than the rate written on your certificate of sponsorship.

Control

• Your passport or documents held by someone else.
• Being told where you must live, and paying for it out of your wages.
• Needing permission to leave, or being followed and checked on.
• Your hours changed at will, with no say and no notice.

Fear

• Being told you will be deported if you complain.
• Threats to your family, here or at home.
• Being told nobody will believe a migrant worker.
• Being made to sign papers you were not allowed to read.

You are not being dramatic and you are not ungrateful. These are the exact things the law was written about, and since 3 September 2026 a recognised victim on a Skilled Worker visa can leave and work elsewhere for the rest of their visa.
