What the new rule does not do. Read this before you resign

Good news travels fast and loses its edges on the way. Within a day this rule was already being described in group chats as things it is not. Here are the four wrong versions we have seen most, and the truth beside each one.

It does not let any Skilled Worker change employer freely

Only workers recognised as victims of modern slavery are covered. For everybody else, changing sponsor still means a new sponsor and a new certificate of sponsorship.

It does not work the moment you say you were mistreated

You need a positive conclusive grounds decision from the Home Office through the National Referral Mechanism. Saying it, even truthfully, is not the same as being recognised yet.

It does not extend your visa

It frees you to work for another employer for the time you already have. It does not add a single day to your permission.

It does not reopen overseas care recruitment

That door closed on 22 July 2025 and this rule does not touch it. Switching inside the UK is a separate route with its own deadline of 22 July 2028.
